Common Name : ZZ Plant
Scientific Name : Zamioculcas zamiifolia
Family : Araceae
Native Region : Eastern Africa (Kenya to South Africa)
Plant Type : Evergreen rhizomatous perennial foliage plant
The ZZ Plant has thick, glossy, dark green leaflets on upright stems that store water in underground rhizomes, making it exceptionally drought-tolerant. Its waxy, almost artificial-looking leaves make it a stylish, nearly indestructible choice for homes and offices alike.
LIGHT
Tolerates low light very well and grows fastest in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.
WATER
Highly drought-tolerant. Water only when the soil is completely dry, roughly every 2–3 weeks, and even less often in winter. Overwatering is the biggest risk to this plant.
TEMPERATURE & HUMIDITY
Prefers 18–30°C and normal room humidity. Avoid temperatures below 10°C and cold drafts.
SOIL
Use a well-draining mix – regular potting soil with extra perlite or coarse sand to prevent waterlogging around the rhizomes.
FERTILIZER
Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength once every two months during the growing season. Skip fertilizing entirely in winter.
POT & REPOTTING
Repot every 2–3 years, or when the swollen rhizomes crowd the pot. Choose a sturdy pot with good drainage.
PROPAGATION
Propagate by dividing the rhizomes at repotting time, or root individual leaflets in soil – this is slower and can take months to form a new rhizome.
PRUNING & MAINTENANCE
Very low maintenance – simply remove any yellow or damaged stems at the base and wipe the glossy leaves occasionally to remove dust.
PESTS & DISEASE
Rarely bothered by pests, though occasional mealybugs can appear. Root or rhizome rot is the main risk from overwatering.
COMMON PROBLEMS
Yellow, mushy stems point to overwatering or rot. Slow or no new growth is completely normal, as ZZ Plants are naturally slow growers. Stretched, pale stems suggest too little light.
SEASONAL CARE
Growth almost stops in winter – water very sparingly and stop feeding. Keep it away from cold drafts near windows or AC vents.
PET & HUMAN SAFETY
Toxic to cats and dogs, and the sap can irritate skin or the mouth in humans on contact or if chewed. Handle with care and keep away from curious pets and children.
PRO TIPS FOR SUCCESS
1. It thrives on neglect – when unsure whether to water, wait another week.
2. Great for low-light corners, offices, or windowless rooms where other plants struggle to survive.
3. Wipe the glossy leaves monthly so the plant can photosynthesise more efficiently.
4. Don't be alarmed by slow growth; a healthy ZZ Plant may only produce a few new stems a year.
5. Wash your hands after handling or pruning, since the sap can mildly irritate sensitive skin.
